Questions We're Often Asked

1. WHAT IS A DOULA? A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and/or the postpartum period. While doulas do not provide medical care, they help families feel informed, supported, and confident as they navigate one of life's most meaningful transitions.

2. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WORK WITH A CERTIFIED DOULA? A certified doula has completed professional training through an accredited organization and has demonstrated the knowledge and skills needed to support families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Certification reflects a commitment to professional standards, evidence-informed education, and continuing education while providing compassionate, client-centered care.

3. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DOULA AND A MIDWIFE? A doula and a midwife have different roles, but they often work together as part of your birth team. A midwife is a licensed healthcare provider responsible for the medical care of you and your baby during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. A doula does not provide medical care. Instead, a doula offers continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures, evidence-informed education, advocacy, and encouragement throughout your birth experience. Together, they provide both medical expertise and personalized support.

4. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIRTH DOULA SUPPORT AND POSTPARTUM DOULA SUPPORT? A Birth Doula supports you during pregnancy and labor by providing education, helping you prepare for birth, offering comfort techniques, supporting your partner, and remaining with you throughout labor and birth. A Postpartum Doula supports your recovery after birth by providing newborn education, emotional support, infant feeding guidance, practical assistance, and helping your family adjust during the fourth trimester.

5. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HAVING A DOULA? Nearly every growing family can benefit from doula support. Whether you're welcoming your first baby, growing your family, planning an unmedicated birth, using an epidural, having a planned cesarean birth, or recovering after delivery, a doula provides personalized support tailored to your unique needs, goals, and birth preferences.

6. I'VE HAD A BABY BEFORE. DO I STILL NEED A DOULA? Absolutely. Every pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience is different. Many parents choose doula support for subsequent births because they want a different birth experience, additional emotional support, help navigating new circumstances, or extra assistance during postpartum recovery, especially while caring for older children.

7. WHEN SHOULD I HIRE A DOULA? You can hire a doula at any point during pregnancy, but many families choose to book early to ensure availability and allow plenty of time to build a relationship, prepare for birth, and create a personalized plan together. If you're further along in your pregnancy, don't worry, it's never too late to benefit from doula support. Reach out to discuss your needs and availability.

8. CAN MY DOULA COME WITH ME TO THE HOSPITAL? Yes! Most hospitals welcome doulas as part of your birth team. Your doula works alongside your healthcare providers and your chosen support person to provide continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures, encouragement, and evidence-informed information throughout labor and birth.

9. DO YOU SUPPORT PARTNERS TOO? Absolutely! My role is never to replace your partner, it's to support both of you. I help partners feel confident by offering guidance, demonstrating comfort measures, providing reassurance, and encouraging them to be as involved as they would like throughout labor and birth. Together, we work as a team to create a positive birth experience.

10. DO YOU SUPPORT HOSPITAL BIRTHS, HOME BIRTHS, OR BIRTH CENTER BIRTHS? Yes. I provide doula support for families planning hospital births, birth center births, and home births. Regardless of where you choose to welcome your baby, my goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout your experience.

11. WHY IS POSTPARTUM SUPPORT SO IMPORTANT? The postpartum period, often called the fourth trimester, is a time of tremendous physical, emotional, and family transition. While much attention is focused on preparing for birth, recovery after birth deserves just as much care. Postpartum support provides encouragement, education, practical assistance, and compassionate guidance to help you recover, bond with your baby, and confidently adjust to life with your growing family.

12. CAN'T I JUST HIRE A NANNY FOR THE BABY? Absolutely, and many families do. However, a postpartum doula and a nanny have different roles. A nanny's primary responsibility is caring for your baby, often after parents return to work or need ongoing childcare. A postpartum doula focuses on supporting the entire family during the fourth trimester. In addition to helping with newborn care, a postpartum doula provides emotional support, evidence-informed education, feeding guidance, recovery support for the birthing parent, practical assistance with newborn routines, and helps the whole family adjust to life with a new baby. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to care for your baby while ensuring you feel supported, rested, and cared for during this important transition. Many families choose a postpartum doula during the first weeks after birth and later transition to a nanny as their childcare needs evolve.

13. DO YOU PROVIDE INFANT FEEDING SUPPORT? Yes. I provide compassionate, evidence-informed infant feeding support for families who are breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or formula feeding. My goal is to help you feel informed and confident as you discover the feeding approach that works best for you and your baby. If concerns arise that require clinical lactation assessment or treatment, I will gladly connect you with a qualified IBCLC while continuing to support you throughout your feeding journey.

14. WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION? Your complimentary consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll discuss your pregnancy, your goals, your questions, and the type of support you're looking for. I'll explain my services, answer any questions you may have, and help you determine whether Birth Foundations Wellness is the right fit for your family's journey. There is no pressure or obligation, just a relaxed conversation designed to help you make an informed decision.

15. WHAT AREAS DO YOU SERVE? Birth Foundations Wellness proudly serves families throughout the Chicagoland area. If you're unsure whether you're within my service area, please reach out. I'd be happy to discuss your location and explore how I can best support your family.

16.DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS? I believe every family deserves access to compassionate doula support. Payment plan options may be available for select services. Please contact me to learn more, and together we'll discuss the option that best fits your family's needs.
